Bird Tray

Debbiedoo's is having a Copycat Challenge Link Party, and you know how I just can't pass up a good party challenge!

Debbiedoo's added Blogs to her challenge this time around, so my copycat project is the tray part of this beautiful table made by Deanna from the blog It's Just Me.  I fell in love with these little birds the moment I saw them and knew immediately I just had to make a charming tray like this of my own.

It's Just Me

So I copied it!

I made a black and white print of the free Graphics Fairy image on my deskjet printer and then took it to my local library to make a waterproof copy on one of their toner based copiers.

The Graphics Fairy
I repainted my wood thrift store tray white and while waiting for it to dry, I used my sharpest scissors with a pointed tip to cut out the birds and branches in several pieces.

When the tray was dry, I decoupaged on the pieces. I fit the edges of each piece together while looking at the image on my computer for the proper placement.

After it dried again I glazed the whole tray to "age" it.

And here are my sweet birds where they've been perching on the hutch...

They make me smile each time I come in the door and pass them by.

I'm so glad you dropped in to see my Bird Tray,
and I hope you have a great day!

  1. Laurel, that is a wonderful copycat version of the bird tray. I love it! The only problem is it might be hard to force yourself to use it as a tray, and cover up all your pretty work.

  3. What a great copycat! Love it. You did an excellent job, I am sure cutting each bird out was very tedious. They look great in black and white and the tray looks great on your hutch!

  17. Perhaps you've covered this in another post and if so maybe you could let me know which one. Why did you have to make a copy of your printout at the library? Why not use the original?
Thanks. I'm a new visitor, BTW.
