I love World Market! Who doesn't? My heart actually flutters as I click on the links and browse through the sale. It's a great sale full of stuff I love.

Unfortunately, I don't need anything right now.

So be still my heart! Just looking today!

Does your heart beat a bit faster for a good sale?

My daughter suggested I let you know that I don't get
paid by World Market. I don't. I just like 'em a bunch. :)

After reading some of your wonderful comments (I LOVE comments!), it occurred to me that World Market isn't in every city. When I was a little girl (a million years ago), my parents would take us to the very first original Cost Plus World Market in San Francisco for special. It was so exotic and different back then with imported goods from far away places like Africa and Asia. Imagine that! We'd spend hours there oooing and ahhhing over things we'd never seen before, then go somewhere special on the wharf for lunch. I still love World Market for their variety and fun exotic designs, and now they've added the funky industrial stuff I like, too. Hope you get to visit one sometime.

Kitchen Happenings and a Galvanized Stand

Some changes have been going on in my kitchen!

We've gone organic! We have a wonderful Farmer's Market and a new Whole Foods Market here in Boise that have made it super easy for me to start replacing the food in my cupboards with organic alternatives. Organic seasonal fresh food tastes so much better to my family that we've started eating a lot (and I mean a lot) more vegetables and fruits in place of processed food. It's not cheap. So far, I figure it's at least $100 a month more for us to eat organic, but we all feel so fantastic since the switch, we think it's worth every penny.

It means a lot more chopping and dicing and time in the kitchen for me, too. I feel super fortunate that we have both the time and money to live in the city and eat organic. We have a huge organic green salad almost every night with dinner, full of every color of vegetables and often sprinkled with nuts, seeds, and dried fruit. I wanted a good place to store all these healthy and delicious salad toppings where I would remember to use them, and where better than on my counter top?

What do you think? I love the industrial look of galvanized metal of all kinds and shapes, and had come across what looked like a galvanized bowl at a yard sale one day for 25 cents. Later, my husband told me it was the end cap from a heating duct!

Well, you know I was down at Home Depot scoping out the furnace section in no time, and sure enough there was a whole section of galvanized duct work and end caps. I bought two more end caps in graduated sizes and glued painted dowels between them to make this tiered stand, then I put the seeds, nuts, and dried fruit in jars.

Here's another change we've made in my kitchen. We used to keep paper napkins in this basket, and one day when we ran out, my daughter suggested we start using more environmentally friendly cloth napkins. In the old days when laundry was a lot harder to do, people used one cloth napkin for an entire week before sending it to the laundry. Napkin rings, embossed with family members' initials or names were used to identify who belonged to which napkin.

I actually prefer cloth napkins over paper, but I was a bit skeptical about the practicality of this. We gave it a try, though, and maybe because we're all adults here who don't have big spaghetti sauce rings around our mouths when we eat spaghetti (as a toddler would), it has worked out really well for us.

I bought a box of wood napkin rings at the thrift store for a dollar and painted our initials on them. I found cheerful inexpensive cloth napkins at Target in eight different colors, and they only get tossed in the laundry when they're dirty. The rest of the time they get tossed back into this basket on the counter for the next meal.

I hope that doesn't gross anyone out. I promise if you come to my house for dinner, I'll give you your very own freshly laundered napkin!

Aren't these tomatoes just ridiculously gorgeously red?! I almost toned down the color in my photos because I didn't think you'd believe how red they are! They're glowing, they're so red!

Another kitchen happening around here has to do with the recipe on my pig blackboard. We used to eat a lot of those prepackaged salad kits because, hello, they're so darn easy! Then I heard Dr. Oz saying Americans were putting on a lot of pounds from salad dressing, not realizing how much hidden sugar is in them. I started checking the ingredients on the little salad dressing packets that came in the kits, and I was SHOCKED. Not only were there a lot of corn sweeteners, there was a bunch of stuff there that I couldn't pronounce, and for me, that's always a bad sign when it comes to nutritional value. So, now we make our own salad dressing, and, hello, it's so darn easy!

Thanks for checking out my Kitchen Happenings. I'd love to hear what you think of my changes. Have you tried eating organic? Do you notice a difference in taste or how you feel? How about those cloth napkins? Do you think I'm a nut case for doing that?

Well, I already know I'm kind of nutty anyway.

Have a great week, everybody!

Are you thinking of going organic, too? It's easier than you think! Check out my new friend Shelley's blog series called Friday Food Focus over at Calypso in the Country. Her series highlights new healthy foods and brands she finds each week.

Friday Finds

It would appear that my lazy summer Sunday turned into a lazy summer Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday! Actually, I started a neat project to share with you earlier this week, but two of the gluing steps took 16 hours each to dry. Unacceptable, right?! I must find a faster-drying glue!

While the glue dried, I painted a first coat of paint on a whole bunch of small projects I've been hoarding saving. It felt so good to be working in my studio again after a lot of being busy with other things, and I should be back to posting these DIY projects soon.

Meanwhile, I hope you're not tiring of Friday Finds, cuz I just love 'em! They give me a chance to curl up on my sofa with my laptop and visit my favorite blogs, then share what I love with you.

One of my favorite blogs, MT-Tails, has had a name change to Oliver and Rust. Meg has put together a photo tour of her home that I know you'll love as much as I do.

Angie has a new blog series at Postcards From the Ridge featuring her favorite paint colors and some tips for picking the right ones for our own homes. This one is Benjamin Moore's Manchester Tan, one of the colors I'm contemplating for my own master bedroom.

At Reposture Studio Kim added some fabulous legs to a chicken coop and made this awesome coffee table. I'm seriously in love with it!

I'm also in love with this adorable funny garden sign found in Jane's garden over at Blondie's Journals.

These sweet succulent nests are found at Chickweed. I think they would look perfect on my patio table.

It's zucchini season, and Trish from Mom On Time Out shares her recipe for this colorful Carrot Zucchini Apple Bread. (She also shares recipes for Chocolate Zucchini Cake, Zucchini and Green Chile Quiche, Zucchini Carrot Oatmeal Cookies and even Zucchini Brownies!)

Now I'll be heading back into the studio to check on my glue project (better be dry!) and do some more painting.

Which reminds me that the Where Bloggers Create 2013 party hosted by  Karen at My Desert Cottage starts today. You'll find a list of all the participating blogs on Karen's sidebar. I'll also be pinning many of my favorites to my Where Bloggers Create Pinterest Board. You'll find gorgeous creative spaces and hundreds of fantastic ideas for your own creative place. It's my favorite blog party ever!

Thanks so much for stopping by today for my Friday Finds.

HAPPY FRIDAY!

A Lazy Summer Sunday

I had such a welcome relaxing day yesterday after the hubbub of the 4th of July.

My day started with some photos of our new front lawn. I had to sandwich between the parked cars on the street, so I only got half of it, but here it is! Our gorgeous green lawn that's watered by our new sprinkler system.

It's the lushest greenest lawn we've ever had, and I can't even begin to tell you how wonderful it is not to be watering it myself.

After shooting a few pictures of the lawn, my husband and I headed for the hills while the morning was still cool for a hike with Tucker.

On the way home from our hike we spied two yard sales, and I got some great stuff to paint and repurpose. Luckily, my husband had some cash in his pockets. He's such a handy guy to have around! I got this waterfall bedside table.

A sewing table I'll turn into an end table.

 A cute little phone table.

And some galvanized junk, a tin bucket, and a crusty wire basket. I just love to find things like this unexpectedly. Somehow, it makes them even better.

A bit later in the morning my oldest daughter and her fiance came over to pick up this little maple tree. We've had this pretty slow-growing tree for over twenty years and were sad to see it go. Unfortunately, since our big shade tree was cut down, the sun is scorching it. To save it, it had to go.

We wrapped the root ball in a tarp, and off it went to its new home.

To a shadier spot next to my daughter's new 1950's ranch style house that she's remodeling.

After putzing around doing a lot of nothing for the afternoon, my youngest daughter made us some spicy shrimp with peach salsa for dinner from my Cooking Light Cookbook. It was the perfect meal for a hot summer evening. (I also found the recipe here, if you'd like to try it.)

After dinner we curled up on the sofa in the family room and watched The Hobbit together.

Sigh...

Now, that's my idea of a pretty great Sunday. How did you spend your day? Whatever you did, I hope it was great, too!
