Don't ask me why, but I just love the look of chicken wire.
When I saw some other bloggers making cloches and baskets out of chicken wire, I was inspired to try my hand at shaping it into something, too. When my eye fell on my old wrought iron plate stand one day, I thought, "ah hah, this could use a chicken wire update!"
So...
I started with my standard black plate stand.
I used wire cutters and needle nose pliers to cut, shape, and reattach the chicken wire into three basket shapes, one for each tier.
After I had all the baskets shaped, I set them aside to prime and paint the plate stand.
I attached the baskets to the stand by twisting the chicken wire around each ring, then touched up the places where the paint was scuffed up with a paint brush. Using a dry brush, I lightly painted the chicken wire baskets, too.
I printed out a vintage apple crate label I found online here, glued it to a wood coaster I painted white, and used some thin wire to hang it from the top of the plate stand. I can easily switch out the label or remove it completely when I want to use the stand for something else.
For now, it's sitting on the dining room table holding some green apples.
I know I'll find all kinds of ways to use my chicken wire plate stand. Like pumpkins and straw for Halloween, Christmas balls and greenery for Christmas, and Easter eggs and grass for spring.
I'll have chicken wire around all the time!
Thanks for coming by today.
I hope you have a wonderful first week of September!

ReplyDeleteBeen reading most of the comments and it seems a plate stand is common item that gets put away for lack of use. Just think of all the great plate stands that will get appreciated and reused, excellent. What a clever lady. I too have one out in our shed but hated to get rid of it, in case someday I'd find a use for it, hooray. I'm gonna have to go out there to find that puppy right away. So glad you shared this post. I'm a big late seeing this post as I'm fairly new to your blog which I'm so glad I did find. Love all your awesome projects.
ReplyDeleteI used to go with my husband quite often when he was a trucker, loved traveling. Anyway we spent some time in Boise, went thru often, I always liked your city. I love the old fashioned homes.
I'll be visiting your blog quite often. Happy Weekend
Would you please tell me where to get the standard black plate stand, you used for this project? I have one just like it, and haven't been able to find another.
