Christmas Ornament Storage

Today will be a lazy new year's day at our house watching the parade and lots of football on television, while a gentle snow falls outside our windows.

I'll be taking down our Christmas decorations tomorrow, so I thought this would be a great time to re-share my system for storing all our delicate glass Christmas ornaments.

I used to have those slotted cardboard honeycomb inserts that came with this box, but every time I went to pick up a layer to get to the one beneath it, the cardboard would fall apart and collapse, and I'd have to put all the slots together again. Frustrating! Plus, if it was full of ornaments and I picked up a layer, the ornaments on the edge spaces would fall out. Even more frustrating!

Last year, I finally decided to create something better.

I bought a few packages of the shorter and wider clear plastic cups at the grocery store and took the time to hot glue them to the cardboard dividers in my ornament storage boxes. It made storing our ornaments and decorating the tree so much easier. I can just pick up the flat cardboard with the cups securely attached and hold it in one hand, while either putting ornaments directly from the cups onto the tree or taking them off the tree and putting them back into the cups. This system really cuts down on the time it takes to both decorate and un-decorate the tree.

You could create this system for any big cardboard or plastic box you have. Just cut some flat pieces of cardboard, mat board, or display board to fit your box size and then hot glue the cups on securely. Layer as many as will fit in your box.

Once you take the time to create this system, you'll have a sturdy and easy ornament storage system for years to come.

I hope you have a wonderful day today, and best wishes for a new year that's full of happiness, good health, and prosperity for you and your loved ones!

PS: A big Congratulations to our Boise State Broncos for winning their third
Fiesta Bowl yesterday!

  1. Great tip, Laurel! I have to go through my decorations before I put the ones I have out away. I brought home a box from work so I can purge a bit and bring the box to Goodwill. I'm hoping to have the energy to do that this weekend. I would like to organize like with like in the different bins and boxes I have as well as label them so I can find what I want/need at a glance.

  2. Love the Gnome!!! And I liked the line in the paper this AM about "Bronco fans cheering with their hearts in their throats!"

    Yay us!

  3. What a great tip Laurel! I love coming up with creative solutions that just make life easier! ...The thought of undecorating, not fun! But the thought of making some changes around here, very exciting! Can you come help me pick paint colors? ... Wishing you all the very best in the new year!

  4. What a wonderful idea you had!

  5. What a great idea! I may have to try this since I manage to break an ornament or two every year... and I even have a huge case of cups leftover from my niece's wedding last October!

On another note, this may sound weird... or even a bit stalker-ish but I've been under the weather since Christmas and spent a couple of days reading ALL of your posts, was so disappointed when I had no more to read! Love the home you've created! Looking forward to more visits in the new year...

  6. What a clever idea, Laurel! I'm taking our tree down today and going through all my old ornaments, so I'll actually be using your idea. I scrolled through all your holiday posts that I missed and each and every room in your home was decorated just beautifully! I hope you get approval to add the fireplace you're missing!
