Bulletin Board Remake

Before my bulletin board looked like this,

 

it looked like this. 

There was nothing wrong with it, but I wanted it to match my new white craft room a little better.

 The frame of my bulletin board is built around the cork part, so I couldn't take it apart to paint and cover it. Instead, I used painter's tape to protect it while I sanded, primed, and painted it.

 

 After the paint dried, I cut a piece of linen fabric about two inches longer and wider than the cork insert. Then I folded it under, creasing it with my fingers and attaching it to the cork with upholstery tacks. 

I laid the tacks out first to estimate the spacing, then used a ruler to keep them about the same distance apart, stretching the fabric taut as I nailed opposite sides. 

Except for hitting my thumb once with the hammer, it was super easy.  

 

I think the colors and style complement my room better now, and it will be easy to remove the tacks and fabric and paint it a new color if I ever want a new look.

Friday Finds

The birds are singing like crazy in my neighborhood today. I think spring just might be here to stay! 

I haven't been able to make my regular rounds of my favorite blogs this week or even answer emails and respond to comments. I really miss it and am looking forward to this weekend and catching up. 

I found out recently that my blog posts were not going out to my subscribers for over a month. I apologize for that and think I have the feed fixed. Except now it looks wonky and is duplicating posts, and I'm not sure how to fix that. 

Do you ever wish you had your very own tech guy? Someone kind of cute and nerdy with glasses?  

I do!

But, on to Friday Finds! 

Tracy at Crow's Feet Chic often decorates with charming colorful vignettes like this one featuring a happy new Norwegian family connection she made via ancestry. com. I just love that Tracy has a vintage Norwegian/English dictionary in her signature color (turquoise).      
 

   

This baseball wreath was made by Gail over at My Repurposed Life along with her nephew, Bubba, who is a baseball coach. It's definitely one of my all time favorite wreaths. "P" is for Bubba's last name and also for Panthers, the baseball team he coaches. So cute! Wouldn't this be a sweet gift for the baseball fan in your life?

Becky at Beyond the Picket Fence is a pallet makin' mama. She's the pallet queen. She makes so many great pallet projects, she's running out of names to call them. I hope that won't stop her from creating more great furniture like this pallet magazine table. Don't you just love the cubbies and wheels?

At Away for the Weekend, Karen shares beautiful photographs from the area around her Vermont weekend home.  My favorites are her barns, and I hope she publishes them all in a big book one day. 

Maria Elena decorates beautifully for every holiday and season at Our Home Away From Home. This week  she is showing us the amazing closet where she stores her fabulous "secret stash." You have to see it all to believe it!

Robin from The Dating Divas has shared an easy tutorial for making these adorable magnetic people. She even has tips for posing. Isn't this just the cutest family?

More Craft Room Storage

Today, I'm sharing the closet in my new craft room. 

Exciting! 

(Well, maybe not so much,  but what can I say? I'm a detail girl!)

Mirror closet doors are great for teen girls who want to check out their outfits from every angle before hitting the school bus, and that was our reason for installing them twenty-five years ago. The teenagers are long gone, and these shiny brass mirrored closet doors should have been gone, too. But when they were tucked away in a back bedroom, replacement wasn't high on my budget list. 

In my new craft room, though, that's a different story. I couldn't live with them.

   

I also couldn't live with these skimpy wire shelves. I need stronger ones for storing heavy craft supplies instead of lightweight clothing, so out came the old wire shelves and rods. I patched the holes and repainted the closet. It's amazing how much paint a little closet uses. Halfway through I was kicking myself for using expensive BM paint instead of a less expensive brand for this space that won't show!  

Something I have managed to learn over the years is don't paint your closets to match your room (in this case it was pink from my daughter's toddler years.) Paint it white, so you won't need to repaint it with each new room color. A white closet will go with any other room paint color. 

  

Lowes

I was planning an adjustable built-in shelf system requiring a lot of sawing, sanding, painting, drilling, and screwing, when I saw this steel shelving unit at Lowe's that just happened to fit my closet perfectly and was on sale.

Meant to be, right? 

These well-built super strong shelves took about an hour to assemble, saving me days of custom work, and they were also about half the price. My closet is 54" wide, and the selves are 48" wide, so I have just enough space on the side for storing my ironing board.

  

   

I cut a thin sheet of Masonite into five pieces to line the shelves and keep smaller items from falling through.

Look how much stuff fits in this closet now! Besides my sewing machine and ironing board, this is my  to-do/junk/why on earth did I buy that - closet.  

And this is how I solved the door problem. I put a tension rod up inside the closet between the walls and bought two inexpensive Target linen-look rod pocket curtain panels to hang on it. 

 

The curtains are easy to open and close, fit the budget, and I kind of like the neutral softness they add to my work room.
